the lost art of dreaming

i thought i would have a chat about dreams today, and how i believe that modern society does not value the concept or art of having big dreams.

when i say 'dreams' in this context, i mean: strongly desired goal or purpose. now thats out of the way, i would like to ask you (yes you) dear reader to think of a big dream you had when you were younger. i assume that it was out of this world MASSIVE, like going to explore distant planets or discover a new species. 

as we grow older, we loose the joy of childhood as realistic, mundane and boring goals are set for us. whilst i agree, having realistic goals helps us progress and not loose motivation, we should still have goals that we know we could never achieve...

or could we?

having goals that seem impossible to the world around us is, in concept, silly. why would we set something we know we could not achieve? i argue that is just what the world needs right now.

for example, i love the tv show Greys Anatomy. whilst knowing it is an unrealistic depiction of hospital life- it still has me wanting to be a surgeon. maybe it's because i love stressful situations or having a team that can always help you when things seemingly start to fall apart. the reason i mention this is that i will NEVER become a surgeon- i dropped chemistry, i am in the bottom set for maths, and i suck at biology. lets just say that science is not my forte.

i mention this fact as my unrealistic dream of becoming a surgeon seems so unrealistic due to borders i have made in my head. if i truly wanted to i could become better at these subjects and live out this dream. do i want to? no.

having unrealistic dreams shapes your decisions in your current reality. by realising why i love the idea of becoming a surgeon, i am able to take these 'ingredients' and mould them into my current skillset. dreams help you find something in yourself that you may not have realised, opening up your reality to many more ideas.

i like to think of my dreams as an aquarium, so many different and unique dreams that i can admire- but never touch. having pure, untampered with wishes and hopes for the world makes life a little better. not all dreams are unachievable though and i encourage you to chase any dream you care deeply about! but at the end of the day, it's nice to dream about fun things, with no expectation of them coming true.
